Andrew Jackson vs. Henry Clay Since the Age of Jackson, seldom has American government been subject to the impact of a pair of politicians who stood completely opposite on most views, yet were equally influential to the times, such as Andrew Jackson and Henry Clay. Their views on economic development varied significantly, creating much opposition between Jackson’s Democratic party and Clay’s Whig party. With Henry Clay opposing him all the way, Andrew Jackson used his Presidential Power to veto many of the aspects of Clay’s proposed “American System” in the areas of internal improvements and the Bank of the United States. They also varied on issues of National tariffs and taxes. The first proposal of Henry Clay’s “American System” which Andrew Jackson effectively devastated through use of Presidential Power was that of Internal Improvements.
