The Gilded Age of American Politics Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner coined the Gilded Age of American Politics term in 1873. It refers to the rise of the wealthy class after the reconstruction in 1865 to 1877. The Gilded Age also saw the rise of the Populist Party, the end of the spoil system, Western migration, and the effect international immigration had on America. Historian Michael Keller described the Gilded Age as a system where “neither party has any principles, any distinctive tenets. Rather they are like two bottles, each bore a label denoting the kind of liquor it contained, but each was empty.” Five presidents constitute the Gilded Age between 1877 and 1896. These presidents ended corruption (of the day), instituted a better civil service, regulated commerce, and introduced the end of Native American independence. The gilded age begins with the election of Rutherford Bichard Hayes.
