January 1 1914- I have lost the track of time in this terrible place; I do not know whether my sanity can overcome the dreadful events in the Karluk. This is mainly why I have started writing this diary. For 4 months we have been trapped in the middle of a frozen Arctic ocean, after a terrible journey from the west coast of Canada. Stefansson, the leader, now greatly despised, believed that under the great layers of ice there is a lost continent. Now we know that his ideas where either mad, copied, or foolish: all three adjectives blend greatly with his selfish, arrogant nature. A dreadful mood is spreading like a plague amongst the crew. Tension is growing, and Steffanson seems to have lost his control. The continual hours of reading and listening to music reflects the crew’s dark, desperate mood, and their greatest fears of dying in this foreign land. Waves of cold and starvation surround us like the Siberian tigers in their easy hunt for the weak, baby elephant surrounded by a cage of despair.
