ESSAY
The novel Goodnight Mr Tom is written by Michelle Magorian. It is a novel about a little boy, named William Beech, who is evacuated to the countryside as the Second World War breaks out. A sad, deprived child slowly begins to flourish under the care of Tom Oakley after been mistreated by his mother. While Tom needs Willie, Willie needs Tom more.
Toms personal relationship with Willie changes throughout the novel. At first sight, Tom saw Willie as a thin, sickly-looking child, pale with limp sandy hair and dull grey eyes. Tom had a negative approach to Willie and was very rude to him. But throughout the novel, Tom spends a lot of time with Willie, and learns to love him. Willie became a major part in Toms life. Tom gave him gifts, clothes and even rescues Willie from his brutal mother and the hospital. They get so attached to each other, Tom adopts Willie, and they call each other father and son. Tom has learnt to love again after the loss of Rachel and their child; this was all because of Willie.
