Unconditional Love - My Papas Waltz and Those Winter Sundays Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Unconditional Love Even after pain and agony, the love between one’s father and his son will never disappear. In the poem “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke the speaker expresses the pain he feels as his father spins him around the room, but nevertheless he is “Still clinging to your shirt” (Roethke 16) showing his devoted love. Another poem displaying the love between father and son is in Robert Hayden’s “Those Winter Sundays.” In this poem, the speaker looks back on his childhood realizing all of the work that his father did to support the family and how he never thanked him for this. The father shows his undivided love everyday as even after a long day of blue-collar work he “had driven out the cold and polished my good shoes as well” (Hayden 10-11). Despite a wide variety of sentiments, both poems shared the theme of the deep, complicated, and unconditional love between child and parent.
