The World by Christina Rossetti Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

RossettiÂ’s ultra-Christian beliefs shine through in her poem entitled “The World” as she metaphorically shows that the world consists of nothing but sinful pleasures that tempt humanity into ignoring the life that God wishes upon us. But in her critique of society, Rossetti contradicts her own main point in the poem by suggesting that anything her all-powerful God created can actually tempt humanity into living a life of sin. Because of her very religious lifestyle, RossettiÂ’s works reflected this in extreme ways. Her themes and even morals displayed in her works are those of basic Christian principles and some say they can be interpreted as events that had occurred recently in her life. But it is her firm belief in God that lends to the argument that her poem is actually hypocritical of her view of God. The poem itself represents RossettiÂ’s opinion on the more material temptations of the world she lived in. “By day she woos me, soft, exceeding fair: But all night as the moon so changeth she; Loathsome and foul with hideous leprosy, And subtle serpents gliding in her hair.Â......
