The book, ¡°Translation Nation: Defining a New American Identity in the Spanish-Speaking United States¡±, by Hector Tobar is based on endless accounts of Spanish-Speaking from various countries, mostly from Mexico. He writes about what it means to be American, and what makes people American, when they are from different roots, and speak different language.
The first language of the most people Tobar encountered in this book is Spanish. They are from Spanish-speaking countries like Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and etc. These thousands and thousands of Latinos crossed the border and crossed the water seeking for freedom: freedom from poverty, freedom from the corrupted government; however, they did not leave their culture and the language behind.
Once they were in the United States, they did not vanish their language and culture.
