Africa and Africans in the making of the Atlantic World
In John Thorntons book; he approaches the question of the first Africans in Africa and how they played a part in the Atlantic Slave Trade and on Africans entering the Americas. He takes an in-depth approach at exploring the experience of African transported from Africa to America during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. In both sections of his book the emphasis is on the African initiative in a manner somewhat reminiscent of the nationalist African historiography of the 1950s and 1960s. He seeks to portray Africans as creative participants in their history instead of unfortunate and passive victims.
The first section is argued on the basis of the advance nature of Africans economies. Europe offered nothing o Africa that Africa did not already produce... Africa trade with Europe was largely moved by prestige, fancy changing taste and a desire for variety (pg 44) African metallurgy for example......
