Colonialism rising to power in the 19th & 20th centuries exercised economic and political domination by creating differences and a framework in which those produced distinctions appeared natural. Presenting the unnatural as natural allows for justification of actions and ensures that they are believable. Three articles discussed will exemplify how colonial differences were imagined and created then made believable.
Vincente Rafael explains the creation of believable difference in White Love: Census and Melodrama in the U.S. Colonization of the Philippines. He states that colonial power needed to gain knowledge in order to colonize the Philippines in a way they could justify. It began attaining and organizing knowledge by way of learning history, mapping, surveys, museums and surveillance and the census. The concept of difference, naturalness and believability was needed to support the idea of white love and colonizers used the census as an instrument to that end.
