Jane Austen: The Role of Women in the nineteenth century Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen is a novel that goes into great detail discussing the reasons for marriage. Marriage in the 1800's, when this novel took place, was very different from conventional marriages today. In that period in time, reasons for marriages were wealth, convenience, and most uncommonly, love. If a woman remained unmarried she became a burden to her family, and society assumed she was unmarriageable therefore there must be something wrong with her. Therefore finding a man was one of women's main priorities. It was thought that getting married was the only answer for security and money. The reason for marriage was not always for the reasons of love. As stated before it was only done for money. The Money was to support the women and also their families. This was an acknowledgement of middle class greed The first of these reasons is the subject of wealth. The opening sentence of Pride and Prejudice states, "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife."
