The Life of Marie Antoinette Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
As a young girl in her early teens, Marie Antoinette was plucked from her home court to get married to the adolescent, short, fat and ugly Dauphin of France, Louis XVI. She was unhappy about this, as she was an attractive young woman, and also the French court was much stricter in rules and regulations than Viennas. By a sick twist of fate, Louis XVI turned out to have a rare illness that made him impotent. Marie Antoinette then had to bear the brunt of being chided for her apparent inability to produce an heir to the throne.
Thus Marie Antoinette took her frustrations out on buying frivolous, expensive things that tickled her fancy. She also had a summer house built which she frequented, together with her friends such as Yolande de Polignac and Thérèse de Lamballe. She also attended many balls and wild parties, and often went for late night promenades in the park or other such places. There were also rumours of various lovers the Queen had taken on, such as a young socialite, Axel Fersen. The young Queen brought on much criticism for her outrageous behaviour.
