Macbeth and Lady Macbeth Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Macbeth by William Shakespeare describes an 11th century event in Scotland, a tragedy nonetheless. Macbeth, the murderer, strives to become more powerful as every day progresses; he accomplishes what needs to be done. However, when Lady Macbeth appears to be the courageous knight, she is the one who fails to bring herself to murder. As the story unfolds, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth prove to be psychological doers, although when put to the test, only Macbeth displays his courage as he puts thoughts into action. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are doers, mentally. When Macbeth asks if this is “the dagger which I see before me,” (2.1.44) he reveals his thoughts of killing Duncan. Not only does Macbeth plan the murder, but he also envisions himself carrying it out. Already, Macbeth murders Duncan. In addition to Macbeth’s contemplation of killing Duncan, Lady Macbeth contributes to the disturbing thoughts of Duncan’s murder saying, “Th’ attempt and not the deed/Confounds” (2.2.14-15).
