Explain the most important reasons why the Ulster unionists were able to prevent the third Home Rule Bill from becoming law between 1912-1914.
The liberals had one a landslide victory in the general elections of 1906 but this gap decreased dramatically during the 1910 elections with the conservatives gaining a massive amount of seats to catch up with, but not overtake the Liberals. Hence the liberals needed votes and turned to the Irish Nationalists. This posed a problem for the Ulster Unionists as they knew they were up against it to get Home Rule abolished. They tried a variety of things to stop the bill, including the UVF, Larne Gun running, drawing up the Solemn League and Covenant. The main reason a lot of these events happened is due to the influence of people involved, such as Carson and Bonar Law, but whoever was in charge the unionists had a big battle to fight.
