Table Settings, Utensils, and Manners in the Elizabethan Era During the Elizabethan era, there were many feasts and many different kinds of food. Along with the food, there were ways to properly set the table, utensils and other things to eat the food with, and, of course, manners on how to actually eat the food. All of these procedures painted a picture for the common meal setup in the Elizabethan era. First of all, the way each social class set up their table for a meal differentiated by money, of course. For the rich, their meal setting was extravagant. They dined twice a day and ate huge amounts of food. They sat on chairs, which, back then, they were considered a superior luxury. Their huge tables were dressed with a velvet cloth and, over top, they lay a linen table cloth. On the table, they set salt boxes which were something only the rich could have. To go even further, there were silver bowls on pillars piled high with apples, cherries, walnuts, and filbits. Even more extravagant, there were many cages of birds that lined the dining hall.
