A Doll's House Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

To Be, or Not To Be? In Henrik Ibsen’s play, A Doll’s House, a circle of people, of family and friends, is revealed through dramatic and realistic scenes. One of the things that Ibsen exposes about the characters in the play is their obsession with appearance. Torvald says, for once being completely himself to his “dolling” wife, “To think that I should be obliged to say to one whom I have loved so dearly and whom I still – No, that is all over. From this moment happiness is not the question; all that concerns us is to save the remains, the fragments, the appearance.” (63) Torvald exposes himself as a liar in that one passage. He shows to his wife and audience that his marriage, although pleasurable and full of happiness, was not a marriage bonded by love. Later in the story, in response to this confession, Nora makes a decision; she decides that married life should be about love, and the pretense or appearance of love was not enough for her.
