Sonya Kovalevsky was born on January 15, 1850 in Moscow, Russia. Her father, Vasily Korvin-Krukovsky, was a Ukrainian man who worked as artillery general in the Czars army. Her mother, Elizaveta Schubert, was German and both her mother and father were well-educated members of Russian nobility. Her grandfather, Fyodor Fyodorovich Schubert, was a noted mathematician who was married to Fyodor Ivanovich Schubert. She was the second of three children of a wealthy aristocratic family. Sonya had a sister, Aniuta, who was six years older than she, and a brother named Fedya, who was three years younger.
When she was eight years old her family moved from Moscow to Palibino which is near St. Petersburg, here they moved into a large house. She always thought that her parents did not care for her because they never spent time with her; she just had an English governess who controlled all areas of her life.
