Sonya Jaitly February 17, 2005 Period 6/7 Of Mice and Men Essay Alone All Along Every individual needs a companion, someone to talk to and listen to. Each character, throughout the course of this novel, suffers from some form of loneliness. Each individual proceeds about counteracting their loneliness in different ways. In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, loneliness is a major theme. This theme is portrayed strongest through the characters of Candy, Crooks, and Curley’s wife. Candy was an old man who was still allowed to work in the farm only because of his handicap; the loss of an arm which had been amputated in a machine while working on the farm. Candy symbolizes the common ranch hand that is already destined to live a lonely life. “Guys, like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place” (p13). Candy, unlike the rest of the workers, had a companion in the beginning of the novel, his dog. Candy has had this dog since he was a pup.
