As an object falls through air, it usually encounters some degree of air resistance. Air resistance is the result of collisions of the object's leading surface with air molecules. The actual amount of air resistance encountered by an object depends upon a variety of factors. (Physics Classroom) The factors include weight, speed (acceleration due to gravity), and area covered by the falling object. The speed and areas covered are directly proportional to air resistance. The higher the speed and area are, the greater the air resistance. Air resistance slows an object down during its descent to a surface below.
An object that is free falling will continue to accelerate due to gravity. No matter what an objects weight, all objects excel until they reach terminal velocity. Terminal velocity is achieved when the force of gravity equals the force of the air resistance.
