A Difficult Journey Anonymous Essay 8/12/04 In novels, authors sometimes take a detour from the main story to present a “story within a story”. John Steinback uses this practice in his classic novel The Grapes of Wrath. The Grapes of Wrath is a tragic story of Oklahoma migrants who are forced off their land during the Great Depression and travel west to California in the hope of finding a better life there. Early in his classic, Steinback describes in great detail the efforts of a turtle to cross a road. This passage actually represents the difficult journey that will be undertaken by the Joad family and other poor migrant families. The beginning of the turtle’s journey gives us a sense of the challenges the migrants will face as they abandon their homes and move westward. Even before reaching the road’s edge, the turtle “came over the grass leaving a beaten path behind him” (pg. 20). Like the turtle, the migrants leave behind them a beaten trail. They leave behind empty houses and belongings that are unnecessary. They leave behind memories and familiar surroundings.......
