The title of Goodmans article The Fat Environment immediately seizes the attention of the reader with its catchy rhetoric. Despite the severity of the issue being discussed, Goodman manages to address obesity, and the controversial issue of the environment as the enabler, in a light-hearted manner, which is the prevalent tone throughout the article.
Goodman successfully applies various literary devices, a few being metaphor, alliteration, repetition and humour and uses them to correlate the increasing number of fast food restaurants and the substantial portions which they continue to serve, with the expanding waistline of the economy (pg. 64) a word she personifies to represent people in society. She cleverly states that, instead of expanding the number of customers, they expanded the existing customers (pg. 64) which, in effect, led to the sixty percent of Americans and the twice as many kids who are overweight as a generation ago.
