Before WW2 the Japanese were treated as second class citizens, denied the right to vote and given job restrictions. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor created massive uproar on the west coast of North America so that all Japanese citizens were under suspicion. There was speculation that the Japanese citizens of British Columbia doing spy work on the coast, and for fear of potential future terrorist attacks, all Japanese citizens were moved a minimum 160 km inland and were sent to work in camps. Why were Japanese citizens that had lived in Canada the past 25-40 years considered a threat and potential spies when their ties to the Japanese were so weak? The governments decision to move the Japanese inland was acted out on reasons unjust, and sending them to internment camps was based heavily on hate and racism, but eventually resulted in a greater commitment to a multicultural society.
