The Glass Menagerie Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Glass Menagerie The title of the play, “The Glass Menagerie,” written by Tennessee Williams, reflects much of the story to me. The story takes place during the 1930’s. This was a turbulent and dark time in American history. Our country was going through the “Great Depression.” There is symmetry between the uneasy peace of the time period and the uneasy peace in the Wingfield family. The word “glass” brings many images and emotions to my mind as I think of the properties of glass. First, there is a correlation to possessions. Glass can be Venetian Glass that is hand blown. It comes in equisetic colors, shapes and sizes. Glass can be a small trinket made from clear glass that is mass produced. Initially glass is like a rock a solid substance and it is hard. To shape glass it is heated and is likened to molten lava. These properties represent life and feelings to me. The mother, Amanda, is solid like her memories. Her son, Tom, is like molten lava that simmers beneath the ground hiding his emotions and aspirations. Glass can be made into daily household i......
