Umoufia Culture in Things Fall Apart Vs. Multicultural Canada Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Chinua Achebe understands that Africa has both complex and dynamic societies. This continent is not primitive, simple or backwards as stereotypically perceived by many people all over the world. Scholars believe that it is this understanding of human society, that makes Achebe’s 1959 novel, Things Fall Apart, a rich cultural text, since it deals with aspects of colonialism and culture clash. This novel is set in the 1890s, just before British colonization, and focuses on the nine Igbo-speaking villages of Lower Nigeria in Umuofia, which is Igbo for "People of the Forest". The people of Umuofia have a social structure and culture that when compared to Western societies, such as Canada, had many differences and similarities. In order to understand these cultures and their diversities we must examine both the Igbo tribe of the Lower Nigerian villages, Iguedo and Mbanta in particular, and multicultural Canada.
