The Forces of Patriotism and The School Policy ¡°Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.¡± Philip Malloy used patriotism as a rampart to mock Miss Narwin. Patriotism was lost in Nothing But The Truth because the main character Philip Malloy overpowered the theme. Avi¡¯s book was a documentary novel about a ¡°decent¡± ninth grader who chose to lie and was caught up in his image. It was a case of immaturity, not patriotism. Philip Malloy¡¯s physical traits, thoughts, verbal communication, and actions, combined with others¡¯ response to him, provided a realistic portrayal of a contemporary teenager. Philip was not just depicted as an ¡°average height ninth grader¡±, but also as a ¡°nice looking boy¡± by Miss Narwin, and ¡°cute¡± by his admirer, Allison Dorsett. He ¡°strutted¡± with self-confidence and arrogance down the hallways of Harrison High. His chestnut-brown hair was ¡°puffy¡± and well combed, which suited his stern looking face.
