Over the centuries, scholars have described Niccolò Machiavelli as a man of evil, immorality and atheism. Machiavelli examined the topic of religion from a purely secular perspective by removing the spiritual aspect and considering only the social and political effects of such an institution. His non-theological study suggests that religion’s importance relies not on its truth, but on the impact it has on the actions of men. Machiavelli suggested that religion holds great political utility for the statesman, as it establishes the core values of a society, creating the opportunity for the people to be manipulated. Machiavelli considered the use of pagan religion by the political leaders of pre-Christian antiquity as an ideal and desired to return to their methods. Christianity, on the other hand, was largely a political failure in his mind because it produced undesirable qualities in men.
