The childcare vs. homecare debate is a controversial one in the U.S. Is this hard-won womans right to work good or bad for their offspring? Was emphasis to be placed on the pursuit of the emotional and intellectual needs of the mother, or those of the children? Since it was assumed that both could not be done together, the mother almost always stayed at home to look after her children. This was not seen as a sacrifice by the mother, or even as the exercise of choice, as the social norms of the time did not recognize the privilege to work. Today, the same question is driven with its complexities. Women are deemed, now, to have a choice. A mother can have a child and go (or return) to work while it is an infant. Many women stay at home full-time with their child for as little as six or eight weeks after birth. The toddler is then consigned to care by a professional at a daycare center. This is done so that a workingwoman may attend to her professional needs, which are now deemed to be the same as a working mans.
