Penelope Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The poem Penelope was written in 1936 by Dorothy Parker who was a feminist. This poem is related to the story of The Odyssey where it briefly talks about Ulysses voyages and bravery but also Penelope's role as Ulysses was gone. Mainly the poem is about women's role at home during the war as the men were in the war. It interprets to the double standard that women receive while men do not receive the same perception. The poem Penelope derives from the Greek myth The Odyssey that is about a man named Ulysses that goes through a journey while coming home from the Trojan War. He encounters many problems such as the lotus plantsÂ’ alluring sensation to Circe's magical powers. The poem is not about Ulysses' journey and bravery, but also about Penelope's battle at home with trying to run Ithaca on her own. She is also raising her son Telamachus, and remaining faithful to Ulysses while many suitors are throwing themselves at her to have her hand in marriage.
