This paper is structured by various subjects. Each speaker’s arguments, Plato’s use of myth and story, and Diotima’s erotic ascent to knowledge of beauty are related to the overall narrative, author’s purpose, and the historical reality of Hellenistic Athens. The first man to make a speech at Agathon’s symposium, a sort of intellectual party for the rich elite of Hellenistic Athens, is Phaedrus. He is primarily concerned with the idea of love as an ancient deity. Using Parmenides, Ascusilaus, and Hesiod, Phaedrus draws upon various mythic conceptions of the birth of love. He claims that love is a great god, one of the most ancient. He quotes Hesiod saying that chaos was born first, “but then came Earth, broad-chested, a seat for all, forever safe, and Love.” Acusilaus, an early fifth century writer of genealogies, agrees with Hesiod on this note and Parmenides furthers Hesiod’s claim by asserting that Earth actually consciously “designed,” love.
