Williams syndrome (Williams-Beuren syndrome) is a rare genetic disorder, it occurs in less than 1 in every 20,000 live births. It is characterized by a very distinctive, elf like or pixie like facial appearance, an unusually cheerful demeanor, ease with strangers, persistently slow learning of basic motor and language skills, a love for music, cardiovascular problems such as supravalvular aortic stenosis or SVAS which is a heart condition caused by the incomplete opening of the aortic valve, and hypercalcemia which is an elevated calcium level in the blood. Children with Williams syndrome are missing about 21 genes on chromosome 7. It shares a few features with autism (another genetic disease), although Williams syndrome children often possess very good social skills, to the point that this condition is sometimes called "cocktail party syndrome". Williams syndrome, first recognized in 1961. It affects males and females equally and is present at birth. It can occur in all cultures and has been found in countries throughout the world.
