The concept of nuclear power has both fascinated and terrified people for years. Its incredible potential as an alternative energy source is better understood today, more than ever before, but few people can actually comprehend its full potential and power. Consider that one pound of completely fissioned uranium would be the energy equivalent of burning several million pounds of coal (Henderson 3). Add to that, the fact that it is more cost efficient and environmentally safe, and people will begin to appreciate what the future may contain. In a world driven by innovation and scientific advancement, nuclear science and technology continues to be a viable and vital focus of research in the world, and most are optimistic regarding its potential as a future energy source. The first nuclear experimentation began in 1938 when two German physicists, Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassman, discovered the revolutionary nuclear technology (Henderson 3).
