St. Croix Island has been the called the beginning of the U.S. and Canada since its settlement in 1604. St. Croix Island is located in the St. Croix River. It is about four miles from the mouth of the river where it meets Passamaquoddy Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The island serves as a national boundary for the U.S. and Canada between Calais, ME and St. Stephen, New Brunswick. St. Croix Island is a very small island being only about four acres in size. The small island was home to the first attempt to establish a permanent settlement by the French in the Americas.
In 1604, Samuel de Champlain, Pierre Dugua de Monts and seventy-seven others sailed up the St. Croix River in search of land to claim for France. At the time, Champlain was one of the best known cartographers (map maker) in all of France. He promised King Henry IV that a legitimate settlement would be found to start moving French settlers over the Atlantic to establish a strong, monopolized fur trade between the 40th and 45......
