Sophocles and the Female Role Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The drama of Sophocles reveals the Athenian sensibility and understanding of life and human nature during the middle of the Golden Age. Athenian society was very dynamic in many areas while it was strict in regard to the treatment of women. Women obtained power only when they became the wife of an influential citizen or could obtain some influence by their relation to a man. They were restricted in their activities to mainly within the realm of a family or in the situation of the activity of a courtesan. Although Athenian women were protected by the state and did not know a different way of living, they were very suppressed. Any historical investigation into the lives of ancient women involves individual interpretation and much speculation. One can read the ancient sources concerned with women and their place in society, but in some sense, they are all secondary sources that were written by men about women.
