Will Education Reform Create More Opportunity? by, Lionel Lewis, was published July 2003 in volume forty, issue five of Society magazine. The article refers to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The author claims that the act, although good intentioned, will be of little impact on closing the opportunity gap.
The primary objectives of the act were to increase standardized test scores, decrease the student to teacher ratios and assuring that teachers are in fact qualified. The government hoped to guarantee that all children have a just and equal chance to receive a higher quality of education.
In 2002 the federal government spent about $26.5 billion dollars, compared to basically nothing in the 1960s. The cost to the local communities is going to be quite significant. Many school districts will struggle to receive the money needed to pay for the required upgrades.
The struggle would be worth it if it would pay off in the long run, however studies have shown that the education reforms that the No Child Left Behind Act......
