My early memories of my neighborhood and the people around where I grew up did not begin until I started junior high school. My Mom always took me to visit my grandparents for summer vacation, which was out-of-state, until both of them had passed away. I did not realize those visits would be a wonderful memory until way later but that is another story.
My neighborhood represented a place to explore when the summer vacation started that following June. Large dirt hills from housing construction became mountains to scale. There were kids roaming around recruiting get to get a playgroup together for an endless game of tag or just throwing out suggestions on what would be fun to do. My favorite time before going in for the night would be chasing lightening bugs as if they were bright diamonds to capture.
Adults were always accessible during the day since central air-conditioning would have been an extravagant luxury in my neighborhood, so the windows and doors were always open. Smells of pasta gravy simmering on the stove would filter through the air, making the wh......
