The Cultural Revolution Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In China between the years of 1966 and 1976, China underwent a cultural revolution. This was a time of great confusion, which is why it is also known as the Decade of Confusion. The Chinese short story “The Destination” was set in this time period. It tells of a young man who has just finished his reeducation with the peasants and is returning to his family in Shanghai. He was looking forward to getting back to the city but, however, when he gets there he realizes that it is not as great as he thought it would be. Dating and trying to find a wife has been harder than he thought and he is also missing the countryside. Every family throughout China was required to send one child, usually the oldest, had to be reeducated. The cultural revolution was proposed by Mao Zedong along with Jiang Qing. They began to criticize intellectualism in October of 1966 and this campaign soon spurred into a movement.
