God’s Grace is Hard to Find The dead silence of the rural countryside is abruptly broken by “a piercing scream from the woods, followed closely by a pistol report” (O’Connor 402). Along a dusty dirt road, crumpled at the bottom of a ditch, a grief-stricken grandmother begs the murderer to repent and spare her life; instead she receives three gunshots to the chest. In addition to the stereotypical idea of superhuman heroes, mortal, everyday heroes exist in the most uncommon places. The grandmother in “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is actually a hero rather than simply a victim because she encompasses religious faith and bravery, allowing her to see humanity in the misfit and she dies in a state of grace. The character of grandmother in O’Connor’s work is often portrayed as a pushy and selfish old woman. Even though her son, Bailey, does not want to take a detour to find the plantation his mother describes, he does anyway because she nags him until he has no choice but to do as she says.
