The United States is often thought of the land of the free and many people may have the misconception that the American culture promotes equality and social standards are for the most part spread equally between the people. The reality is that America runs on a capitalist society and in order for capitalism to survive it has to have a poor and lower class. In the short story “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara, the idea of inequality within America’s society is introduced to kids from a “ghetto” neighborhood by an educated woman, who volunteers to spend time with the kids. “The Lesson” emphasizes the inequality in society through an educated lower class woman introducing kids, who are unconcerned with her ideas, to a higher mainstream society and world which they are oblivious about. In the story a lady by the name of Ms. Moore, takes it upon herself to be a role model and an off school teacher to the kids of the neighborhood.
