The Intense Identity Crisis of Maciek Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Louis Begley’s Wartime Lies, the Jewish character of Maciek would be a psychologist’s nightmare. When Nazi Germany invades his homeland of Poland, his transition from childhood to manhood happens relatively overnight. Survival became top priority in a war where Jews were to be exterminated. The necessary measures of practicing dishonesty took the form of several disguises, bogus papers, countless lies, and a large amount deceit. Maciek’s Jewish identity could no longer be noticeable to others, thus forcing him to adapt the way of life of others; in particular, German and Polish. Can any human-being live and breathe, day in and day out, such fraudulence without feeling some sort of ill-effects on their self-identity?
