Native American and Native Hawaiian cultures have both undergone this type of stereotyping and commodification. Although Native American and Native Hawaiians have many differences within their respective cultures, both groups have faced stereotyping and commodification that have impacted their communities.
The Pocahontas Perplex: The Image of Indian Women in American Culture by Reyna Green explores the stereotypes that were put on Native American women by whites throughout conquest. She describes the development of the Squaw and the Princess two identities bestowed upon Indian females. The Princess is the more ideal character as beautiful, clean, and the apple of a white mans eye. Her counterpart, the Squaw, is darker, dirty, and unwanted by white men. Despite their differences, they are both tied to definition be relationships with white men (Talbot, 210).
