There are many disagreements as to what really caused the fall of the Roman Empire. Rome controlled almost all of Europe and some of Asia. Rome was also one of the most powerful empires of its time. It seems inconceivable to most how, an empire so powerful could fall that quickly. Many people blame the fall of Rome on three main causes political, social and economic. Though there are many possible causes for the fall of Rome, I believe that the main cause is economic. The economy is the basis of all successful empires. Economy is the system of trade, currency exchange (money) and the overall income of the government. With out a strong economy, it would probably be true to say that no empire could maintain its power.
There is a lot of evidence that Rome had a weak economy. As it states in doc.1 they (roman govt) could not organize to protect themselves; they could not serve in the army
