Topic: Nine Night Jamaica’s Cultural Death Ritual Have you ever dance and sung Sankey all night until your throat is sore. Have you ever been to or heard of Jamaica’s most popular death rituals. Well if you have not, you do not know what you are missing at a nine night which is sometimes called a set up. For hundred of year’s Jamaicans have endorsed in their culture of engaging in a ceremony of passage when a family member dies. It is a strong belief of Jamaicans that the spirit of the dead is awakened on the third day of the death and will reign until the ninth night, the day before it is put to rest. A nine night do not need an invitation so people travel from all walk of life to engaged in the ceremony which is usually held either on the veranda or under large tarpaulins set up in a tent-like structure next to the house under which everyone would gathered to meet, comfort and support relatives of the deceased and to say good bye to the departed ones with a host of singing, dancing and an array of food.
