Thesis: In Rebecca, Dapne DuMaurier creates a mood of mystery and intrigue when Rebecca dies. In the beginning of the novel, the narrator is the insecure, shy and inexperienced paid companion of Mrs. Van Hopper. However when she marries Maxim De Winter her life totally changes. An unnamed young girl, poor and serving as a companion to the vulgar Mrs.Van Hopper, travels with the old lady to Monte Carlo, there she meets a nomadically somber, mysterious and wealthy old man named Maxim de Winter.(King pg107- 108) She becomes a part of an unknown world. She also has to put up with the responsibilities and expectations imposed on her as the wife of the famous Maxim De Winter. “When she first meets Maxim in Monte Carlo, Mrs. De Winter is a poor naïve young girl with a shy meek demeanor .Described as “devastatingly plain.” Still Maxim is attracted to her.
