There are a number of explanations put forward to explain the effect that media influences have on anti-social behaviour. The first one to take into account would be the explanation of situational effects or short term effects.
From which the cognitive priming explanation derives, this explanation states that aggressive ideas shown in the media can spark off other aggressive thoughts in shared memory pathways (Berkowitz 1984). After viewing a violent film, the viewer is primed to respond aggressively because the memory network involving aggression is activated.
Furthermore Bandura (1973) suggested that arousal increases the dominant behaviour in any situation. If the feeling of arousal is attributed to anger, then aggression is likely to result. Research has shown that the arousal produced by (violent) pornography facilitates aggressive behaviour (Zillman 1983).
