Kate Chopins short story, The Story of an Hour, examines a womans reaction to her husbands unexpected death and rebirth. Mrs. Mallard is described in paragraph eight as young, with a fair calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength. The action in the story revolves mainly around Mrs. Mallards preservation Mrs. Mallard suffers in medical and marital conditions but most of all, poses a threat to herself as her sister Josephine proves. Everything is devised to save her from any sudden or extreme misery. The resulting situation is what ends up killing her because this precaution was not taken.
Mrs. Mallards marriage epitomizes the status of women in early twentieth century in that women are subject to mens power and have to conform to the role of house wife and complete obedience to their husband. Mrs. Mallard has simply grown accustomed to her husband and remains with him solely because it is comfortable and habit.
