The purpose of our correctional system is well defined, the jobs the officers in our correctional system are defined, and the way the institutions that are included in our correctional system, are to be run are well defined. So why is there evidence of misconduct and corruption at every level in the correctional system? There are many causes for abuse and misconduct in this system, but the one that sticks out the most is simply stress.
There have been studies and interviews conducted that show employment as a correctional officer can be stressful. There are many sources of stress for correctional officers and the effects of stress can be serious and widespread. It is when stress increases that the likelihood of abuse and misconduct, play a role. Under staffing, overtime, rotating shift work, and supervisor demands, create stress for many officers. Work-related sources of stress for officers include the threat of inmate violence, actual inmate violence, inmate demands and manipulation, and problems with coworkers.
