Oktoberfest Oktoberfest is one of the most recognized festivals in the world. Oktoberfest can be construed as a tradition, custom, and life style. The whole custom started back in the early 1800s in Europe, when a crown prince married a princes and started the whole tradition. Oktoberfest has been a tradition and a life style for almost 200 hundred years in Bavaria. Oktoberfest has a rich background and a richer future. Oktoberfest started back on October 12, 1810 when a Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese Von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Only five days latter the National Guard of Bavaria organized a large public festival honoring the couple. This festival had a large horse race in the public square and which all-Bavarian citizens were welcomed to attend. The festival was held at the Festival grounds, latter named Theresienwiese after the crowned princes. Oktoberfest has gotten so big that the people of Bavaria call the festival by their native tong Wiesn, which means field or meadows in German.
