The Graduate: Depiction of Alienation Through Song Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In 1967, Mike Nichols directed one of the most popular films of the time, The Graduate starring Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. The film linked the gap between the generations, the alienation of man from his surroundings, and the power of popular music by matching up the screenplay with a number of songs by Simon and Garfunkel. One specific song written in 1965 is “The Sounds of Silence” by Paul Simon. It was chosen as the voice of Benjamin Braddock in the film. “Captivated by the intense personal lyrics and melody of “The Sounds of Silence,” Mike Nichols, the motion picture director, commissioned Simon and Garfunkel to compose and perform original music for The Graduate, a phenomenally successful film about the coming of age of Benjamin Braddock, an alienated young American” (3). The Graduate, tells the story of Benjamin Braddock a recent college graduate who finds himself alienated from society.
