The Women of the War Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Women have long been fighting for equal rights, respect and the same opportunities offered to men, and it was not until the last half of the twentieth century that women began to receive better treatment and opportunities. Throughout history women have been treated like inferior beings. They have been treated as possessions and property, they have been disregarded as silly and emotional, and they have been stereotyped as meddling gossips. This is especially true in Homer’s The Iliad. The women of The Iliad have one purpose and that is to serve the men. The mortal women of the story are treated as sub-human, and the goddesses are not treated much better. They are symbols of emotions, impulses, and sex. The mortal women of The Iliad do little more than service the men, who usually win them as war prizes. The Trojan War begins because Agamemnon steals Achilles’ war prize, Chryseis. Achilles is not fighting for the woman he loves but a piece of his property that was stolen. Chryse, Chryseis’s father, went “to win his daughter back” again implying that she is a possession ......
