Taming The Jungle Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Jungle by Upton Sinclair is the story of a typical immigrant’s life in the early 20th century United States. Rather than the fabled streets paved with gold, Jurgis Rudkos finds an overcrowded slum seething with disease, poverty, and depravity. As a Socialist, Upton Sinclair may have been biased to promote his political philosophy, but his descriptions of the social, political, and industrial exploitation are accurate. Although Upton Sinclair’s vision of a Socialist revolution never occurred, many of the social problems exposed in The Jungle were addressed by the reforms of the Progressive Era. One of the most appalling failings of the United States in this era of The Jungle is the lack of quality regulation in the meat processing plant. Most inspectors did not thoroughly examine the meat produced in plant, and those that did accepted bribes to look the other way when meat was unacceptable for market.
