Plato’s book The Symposium is an in depth analysis into the complex subject of love. As in any quest for knowledge in any subject, the journey is to find the objective truth of that subject. Plato makes his point in The Symposium that there is no definite answer to the objective truth of love. We see this not only through the contents of the speeches but also thought the set up and structure of the book. Through different methods Plato show the only objective truth about love is that it is no objective at all, but relative to every individual’s perception of love and their personal quest that has brought them to that perception. Plato show how objective love can be through the speeches given by the guest at the symposium. The views and ideas about love vary from person to person due to their place in the world or simply, their occupation. Eryximachus’ speech and ideas of love are very influenced by his profession as a doctor. He immediately starts to parallel love of the mind or soul with health of the body.
